I hate the cynicism in the responses including my own, but they are rooted in reality. It’s not worth it anymore to me because even if I got a dream position, there is zero guarantee I would be creatively fulfilled. My earliest jobs came from referrals I gathered before moving and from craigslist. I came to LA with a lot of experience and a film and TV education across multiple departments, and it really didn’t matter. Coders, programmers, medical technicians, bus drivers, whatever - you can eventually find a job based on your skill and some experience. It was hard 10 years ago, but now its akin to winning the lottery. Just read the comments in this thread and throughout the subreddit. I showed my resume to career counselors at my school who don't see anything wrong with my resume and I am hearing back about small retail jobs that I apply to for side work but I would much rather go straight to work in the film/tv industry where my skills in development would matter. I have reached out for general meetings through LinkedIn hoping that something would come from my search and I am grateful for the insight but nothing has come of it. I am graduating this weekend and still have nothing lined up after months and months of searching. For the past couple of months, I've used sites like Hollylist, Tracking Board, LinkedIn, and indeed applying to assistant jobs and paid internships that don't require me to be in school. I was hoping it would lead to a job but the internship has come to an end and there were no openings. I moved to LA in January of this year and began working as an unpaid development intern with a small production company. Hello, wanted to reach out to vent a little bit of my frustration and hopefully find some suggestions on where to go.
